How to choose a plastic bucket: 7 parameters

Don't choose a bucket from a catalog photo. Choose it by seven specific parameters: brim-full capacity, top opening, handle, lid with OPEN tear strip, the weight of the packaging itself, units per pallet, and how your brand goes on it. We walk through each one using real HTI Group products made in the Bishkek Free Economic Zone, from a small 560 ml bucket to a 21 L one. The guide is for food technologists, buyers, and owners of small production shops in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

Buyer's tool

One bucket, all its numbers at once

Choose a size and the tool will show the bucket to scale with its row from the table: brim-full capacity, top, height, tare weight, and units per pallet. On the "By weight" tab, enter the net weight of your product and the tool will pick a size; "Per shelf" calculates how many buckets fit in a row.

Cheat sheet

Five numbers to compare before you order

Here are eight of our fourteen sizes, the ones where the differences between parameters are easiest to see. The "Brim-full" column shows the full capacity of the body, and "Top" is the diameter of the opening, which decides how the product will be filled and scooped out. Tare weight tells you how much polypropylene you buy along with each bucket, and the last column shows how many empty buckets fit on one pallet.

Look at the pairs with the same opening: 3 and 3.8 L (200 mm), 18 and 21 L (332 mm). Only the height changes within each pair, so moving to the next size up doesn't require a different scoop or filler. Also compare tare weight with capacity: 21 L of product in one large bucket takes 620 g of plastic, while 21 separate 1 L buckets take 756 g.

Parameters 1-4

Product and handling: the first four parameters

The first four answer one question: is the bucket easy for the people who fill it, carry it, and open it? Mistakes here cost the most. An awkward opening slows down filling every day, and a weak handle on a heavy size turns into customer complaints. That's why these points are checked before you compare quotes.

1. Brim-full capacity

The nominal size on the price tag is the working fill, and the body is always a little bigger. A 1 L bucket holds 1.18 L to the brim, and an 8 L bucket holds 9.326 L. The headspace lets the lid snap on without squeezing product out and keeps liquids from splashing when you close it. Food technologists need both numbers.

2. Opening and height

The top diameter decides how the product is filled and scooped out: with a scoop, a spatula, or a filler. The 560 ml and 850 ml buckets share the same 118 mm opening, but the first is short, at 80 mm, while the second stretches to 124 mm. Wide and low works well for thick pastes; tall and narrow saves shelf space.

3. A handle for the weight

Up to 1 L, you can get by with side lugs, a light plastic handle, or a molded-in handle, as on the 900 ml bucket. For 2.3 to 3.8 L, you choose between a 13.4 g metal bail handle and a plastic handle. From 8 L up, we fit a metal bail handle with a plastic grip: a full bucket is heavy, and the grip keeps the wire from cutting into your palm.

4. Lid and OPEN tear strip

The flat lid seats into a double rim, and under the rim there's a molded tear-off strip embossed with OPEN. You can't remove the lid the first time without tearing off the strip, so the store can tell at a glance whether the bucket has been opened. For retail it's a must, and for moving product around the plant the seal simply stays out of the way.

Parameters 5-7

Warehouse, truck, shelf: three more parameters

Once the bucket suits your product, you still need to know what the packaging will cost you in the warehouse, in the truck, and on the shelf. These points are rarely checked on the first order and often remembered on the second, when pallets of empty buckets already fill half the warehouse. The last two items on the list aren't parameters but habits that save money.

15. Tare weight. Your customer pays for net weight, but you ship gross weight. A 560 ml bucket weighs 23 g, a 3 L one 95 g, and a 21 L one 620 g: the larger the size, the less plastic per liter of product.560 ml bucket3 L bucket21 L bucket
26. Nesting and pallets. Empty buckets nest inside each other, so one pallet holds 7,200 of the 560 ml buckets or 600 of the 21 L buckets. Jerry cans don't nest, so only 180 or 100 fit. Details are in the pallet cheat sheet.560 ml bucket21 L bucket
37. Branding. A label works for a trial batch and frequent design changes; in-mold labeling (IML) suits ongoing production, where the image is fused into the wall during molding.
4Body color. White is the choice for labels and full-coverage printing; clear is for when the look of the product itself does the selling.
5Trial fill. Fill the bucket with your product, close the lid, lift it by the handle, and put it on the shelf where it will be sold.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about choosing a bucket

Didn't find an answer? Our sales manager replies Mon-Fri, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM Bishkek time

Both numbers matter. The nominal size is what you promise your customer; brim-full capacity is the physical volume of the body. A 3 L bucket holds 3.28 L to the brim, and a 15 L bucket holds 16.56 L. The difference stays empty under the lid, and you shouldn't fill it.

Both have a 200 mm opening, but the height differs: 137 mm for the 3 L bucket and 176 mm for the 3.8 L one. Tare weight differs too: 95 g and 110 g. The same number fits on a pallet: 2,800 units each.

This size comes with a metal bail handle, or a plastic handle on request. If the full bucket will be carried often, metal is more reliable; for store shelves and storage, plastic will do. Confirm the option with our sales manager when you request an estimate.

Yes. List all the sizes and quantities for our sales manager, and they'll prepare one combined estimate. It's a convenient way to buy both retail and bulk packaging for the same product in a single shipment.

Our sales manager prices each order individually. The price depends on size, quantity, handle type, body color, and branding. Call +996 222 600 292 and read out your list of sizes, and we'll calculate a price for your order.

Yes: with a label on the finished bucket or with IML, where the image is fused into the wall during molding. The first method is good for testing and small orders, the second for steady production under your own brand.

Yes, by the pallet within the EAEU: to Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, Karaganda, and other cities. Our sales manager confirms delivery time and cost when you place your order, and the number of pallets depends on the sizes you choose.
