Bucket vs jerry can: which to choose for liquids and pastes

Oil, detergent, sauce, paint, syrup: any of them can go into a bucket or a jerry can, but handling the product afterward is a different story. A jerry can works well when the product is poured through the neck and closed with a cap. A bucket wins when the contents are scooped out with a spatula, a putty knife, or a ladle. Below, we go through the choice step by step and compare real figures: tare weight, dimensions, and units per pallet.

Buckets and jerry cans of similar sizes

To keep the comparison fair, we paired packaging of similar capacity: the 5 L jerry can with the 3.8 L and 5.6 L buckets, and the 10 L jerry can with the 8 L and 11.5 L buckets. The table shows the empty weight of each item, how many fit on one pallet, and how you get to the product.

11.5 Lbucket307 g816lid over a 295 mm openingputty, primer, honey

The gap in weight and pallet counts comes down to design. A jerry can is a closed shape with a handle molded in one piece with the body and stiffening ribs at the base, so it weighs more per liter of capacity than a bucket. Empty buckets nest inside each other, which is why one pallet holds 1,920 buckets at 5.6 L versus 180 jerry cans at 5 L. For storing empty packaging, that's more than a tenfold difference.

Fill weight and neck

Enter your fill weight and the tool picks the packaging

Water, oil, and mayonnaise have different densities, so the same packaging holds a different weight of each. Enter the net weight you need in kilograms, and the tool will pick a bucket or jerry can from the table in this article and show the gross weight. The "By product" tab opens the matching table row, and the "Order" tab calculates pallets.

Four questions

What decides the choice between a bucket and a jerry can

Arguing about packaging in general gets you nowhere: each type has its own job. It's easier to ask yourself four questions about the product and what happens to it after filling. The answers usually point to the right choice on their own.

Thick products go in a bucket5.6 L: 224 mm opening, 156 g tare weight
Does it pour or hold its shape?

The simplest test is a spoon. If the product runs off it in a stream, it's easy to fill and pour through the neck of a jerry can. If it sits on the spoon in a mound, like mayonnaise, putty, or crystallized honey, it won't come out of a narrow neck, and you need the wide lid of a bucket.

How the product is taken out

A jerry can is tipped by its handle to pour, and the last of the product drains toward the neck. A bucket opens across its full width and tapers toward the base, so a thick product can be scraped out with a spatula down to the last spoonful. With expensive pastes, every spoonful left on the walls is money lost.

Where empty packaging is stored

Buckets nest inside each other; jerry cans don't. For a plant that keeps a month of packaging in stock, this matters: a pallet of 11.5 L buckets holds 816 units, while a pallet of 10 L jerry cans holds just 100, at a similar capacity. If your warehouse is small, this alone can settle it in favor of the bucket.

How the packaging is carried

A jerry can has its handle molded together with the body, so it can't get lost or bent. Buckets from 8 L up come with a metal bail handle and a plastic grip that doesn't cut into your palm. Buckets from 2.3 to 5.6 L come with either a metal or a plastic handle.

How to choose

Five tips for different products

Below are typical products made by plants in Bishkek, Osh, and Almaty, and the packaging that suits them. If your product falls somewhere in between, describe it to our sales manager: sometimes it makes sense to pack the same product in both types for different sales channels.

1Water, vegetable oil, liquid detergents, car care products: a 5 or 10 L jerry can. See jerry cans for oil and for car care products.10 L jerry can
2Mayonnaise, sauces, adjika, pastes: a bucket with a wide opening, a double-rim lid, and an OPEN tamper-evident tear strip for retail. More in the section on buckets for sauces.
3Paint, putty, mastic: a bucket from 8 L up with a bail handle and plastic grip. A roller and a putty knife fit easily through an opening 276 mm wide or more.8 L bucket
4Syrups and toppings for cafes: a jerry can if the product is poured in portions, and a bucket if it is thick and scooped out with a spoon.
5Retail products where shoppers want to see an untouched pack: a bucket with an OPEN tear strip under the rim. As long as the strip is intact, the lid hasn't been removed.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions: bucket or jerry can

Didn't find an answer? Our sales manager replies Mon-Fri, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM Bishkek time

A jerry can: oil is poured through the neck, and the screw cap closes it after each use. For a cafe kitchen, 10 L is more convenient; for households and retail, 5 L.

If the product pours, even slowly, a jerry can will do. If it's a paste or gel scooped out with a measuring spoon, a bucket is more convenient. Read more in our article on buckets for household cleaning products.

Empty jerry cans don't nest inside each other, so a pallet holds 180 units at 5 L or 100 at 10 L. Buckets of similar capacity nest in stacks, so a pallet holds many times more of them.

The 5 L jerry can is 240 mm tall and 163 mm wide, so it fits easily on a store shelf. The 10 L jerry can measures 296 by 201 mm and weighs 420 g empty, which suits kitchens, workshops, and small wholesale buyers.

The jerry can has a flat front panel for a label. Buckets take a label or IML, where the image is fused into the wall during molding and doesn't wear off when washed.

Our sales manager quotes a price for each order based on sizes, quantity, handle, and printing. Call +996 222 600 292 and you'll get a single quote covering both types of packaging.
