Plastic buckets for honey

Honey is heavy: a liter weighs about 1.42 kg, so its packaging has to carry the weight, close tightly, and show the customer that nobody has opened the bucket before them. We mold buckets from 850 ml to 21 L in the Bishkek Free Economic Zone (FEZ) and ship them to apiaries in Issyk-Kul, Naryn, Talas, and Suusamyr, and to packers and honey traders across Kyrgyzstan and to Kazakhstan. Retail calls for 0.85-1 L, family supplies for 2.3-3 L, and wholesale for 11.5 L and up.

The honey scale: kilograms, buckets, pallets

Honey is sold by weight, but packaging is ordered in liters. Choose a bucket, and the tool shows the net weight at nominal fill and the gross weight. Enter the fill weight you need in kilograms, and it picks a size from the lineup on this page. The "Order" tab converts your harvest in tonnes into units and pallets.

How much honey a bucket holds

Beekeepers count their harvest in milk cans and kilograms, customers pay by weight, and packaging is ordered in liters. The table brings it all down to one measure: how much honey goes into each bucket at a density of about 1.42 kg/L, and how many tonnes of product one pallet of empty buckets can take. Figures are rounded to 0.1: thick honey from a particular harvest may vary slightly either way.

A one-liter bucket holds almost a kilo and a half, a familiar retail weight at a bazaar stall. For wholesale, the 15 and 21 L sizes pay off best: a pallet of these buckets takes more honey than any other size, which means fewer trips for empty buckets during the season. Nominal capacity reflects a working fill; brim-full, each bucket holds a little more.

What matters for honey

Four things beekeepers check in a bucket

Honey is extracted in summer but often sold in fall and winter, after it has set. So beekeepers choose a bucket by more than liters: it also matters how easily the honey comes out later, how the bucket gets carried to the truck, and how to prove to the buyer that nobody has touched the contents. Here's what experienced beekeepers from the Chuy Valley and Issyk-Kul look for when choosing packaging for the whole season.

Set honey scoops out easily

Almost all honey crystallizes over time, and getting it out of a narrow-necked can means digging. A bucket opens across its full diameter and tapers toward the bottom, so crystallized honey comes out with a spoon or spatula, with nothing left in the corners. At the bazaar, customers see the seller take honey from the top rather than from under a layer, and that builds trust too.

Proof the bucket hasn't been opened

Under the lid rim there's a tamper-evident tear strip embossed with the word OPEN. As long as it's intact, the buyer knows the honey hasn't been transferred or diluted since it was packed. For a trader buying from several apiaries, it's also a quick way to check which buckets have already been opened for tasting.

Handle under real weight

A full 21 L bucket weighs almost 30 kg. The heavy sizes come with a metal bail handle and a plastic grip that doesn't dig into your palm as you carry the bucket from the extractor to the truck. Retail buckets up to one liter make do with a plastic handle or none at all, since they don't weigh much.

Your apiary's brand on the wall

Your apiary name, harvest area, and phone number go on with a label or in-mold labeling (IML). With IML, the image is fused into the wall during molding and stays put even after a sticky bucket is rinsed under running water. A customer who liked your honey can find you by the bucket next season too.

How to choose

Size by sales channel

An apiary usually sells in several ways at once: retail at the bazaar, orders from friends and neighbors, and bulk sales to a trader. Each channel needs its own size, and keeping two or three sizes in stock is cheaper than transferring honey from one container to another later. Every transfer means honey lost on the walls, extra work, and the risk of the honey absorbing moisture.

4A clear body when the color does the selling: white sainfoin honey and amber wildflower honey look better through the wall than with any label.
5A white body for a label or IML, when customers remember your apiary's name rather than the shade of the honey.

Buckets ready before extraction starts

Empty buckets nest inside each other, so a beekeeper heading into the mountains hauls a stack of buckets, not a truck bed full of air. You can pick up buckets by the pallet from the factory warehouse in the Bishkek FEZ, Ak-Chiy village. Our own trucks deliver across Bishkek and the Chuy Region, and we ship to Issyk-Kul, Karakol, Naryn, Talas, Osh, and Jalal-Abad via a freight carrier. For packers in Kazakhstan, we ship by the pallet to Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, and Karaganda within the EAEU. Your sales manager confirms delivery time and cost when you place the order, so it makes sense to order packaging for the season early, while the frames are still in the hives. For apiaries in Suusamyr and Naryn, where the roads to the summer hive sites are long, it's easier to take the whole season's supply of buckets in a single delivery.

Frequently asked questions about honey buckets

Didn't find your answer?A sales manager replies Mon-Fri, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM, Bishkek time

About 1.4 kg: a liter of honey weighs roughly 1.42 kg. Brim-full, the one-liter bucket holds 1.18 L, but don't fill it right up to the lid: you need a small gap so the lid seats evenly in the rim.

The bucket opens across its full width and tapers toward the bottom, so set honey can be scooped out with a spoon or spatula right from the bucket. With bulk quantities, that's much easier than working with a narrow-necked can. A packer takes off the lid, scoops out the weight needed for smaller containers, and closes the bucket again with the same lid.

A clear bucket shows off the honey's color and texture, so it's the usual pick for retail at the bazaar. White is chosen for a label or IML, when the apiary's name sells rather than the look of the product. Many apiaries stock both: clear for the bazaar, white for stores and orders.

Our sales manager prices each order based on size, quantity, handle type, and printing. Call +996 222 600 292 and give us your expected harvest, and we'll work out the packaging for your season. If you need several sizes, list them all and we'll put them in one quote.

Yes. For small orders, a label on a finished bucket works well; for large runs, IML, where the image is fused into the wall during molding and won't rub off or peel when washed.

Yes, by the pallet within the EAEU to Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, Karaganda, and other cities. Your sales manager confirms delivery time and cost when you place your order. Empty buckets travel nested inside each other: a pallet holds 6,480 one-liter buckets or 600 of the 21 L size.

A metal bail handle with a plastic grip, which is exactly what the 21 L bucket comes with. The grip spreads the load across your palm, so a bucket weighing about 30 kg can be carried without wrapping a rag around the handle.
