Tamper-evident buckets: how the OPEN tear strip works and why retail needs it

Every HTI food-grade bucket, from 560 ml to 21 L, has a tamper-evident tear strip molded under the rim with OPEN embossed on it. As long as the strip is intact, no one has removed the lid since filling. To open the bucket for the first time, you have to tear the strip off, and there's no hiding that. This guide covers how to close buckets on the filling line so the tamper evidence is unmistakable, how a store should check incoming orders, and how to show shoppers where to look.

Why retail needs it

Four store problems the seal takes care of

For the manufacturer, the seal is just part of the lid. For a store, it's a working tool that helps at every step, from unloading the truck at the back door to the moment a shopper puts the bucket on the checkout belt. Here's where it saves staff time and heads off unnecessary questions.

One-minute receiving

The stock clerk walks around the pallet and checks the seals without opening a single bucket. A bucket with a torn seal is set aside right away and noted on the delivery receipt while the driver is still at the gate. The claim against the supplier is filed at receiving, not a week later when no one can remember where the opened bucket came from.

Seal facing out on the shelf

The seal sits in one spot under the rim. If buckets go on the shelf with that side facing the aisle, shoppers can see the intact seal without even picking up the product. With a clear body, they also see the product right next to the seal and can size up both product and packaging in a couple of seconds.

Samples kept off the shelf

If a store opens a bucket for tasting, the seal breaks, and everyone can see it. It's easy to label that bucket as a sample right away and keep it behind the counter. Shoppers won't take an opened bucket instead of a sealed one, and staff won't have to remember which bucket has been touched.

Hassle-free returns

When a bucket comes back with a complaint, start with the seal. If it's intact, the conversation is about the product itself and how it was filled. If it's broken, the question is who handled the bucket after the plant: the warehouse, the driver, or the shopper. A disputed case gets sorted out without a long investigation.

Where you sell: which bucket and how much to fill

Click a point of sale, and the tool shows the bucket to scale, its brim-full capacity, the headspace under the lid, and the handle type. The "By weight" tab converts capacity into kilograms of product, and the "Order" tab into the number of buckets and pallets per month.

Fill-level cheat sheet

How much to fill so the lid sits flat

The seal only gives an honest signal on a properly closed bucket. If you fill right to the brim, the lid goes on crooked, and the excess squeezes out and smears the area under the rim where the seal sits. The table shows each size's brim-full capacity and the headspace above nominal capacity to leave when filling.

The small 560 and 850 ml buckets have very little headspace, about 100 ml, so they're easier to fill with a dispenser than by eye. Buckets from 11.5 L up have almost a liter above nominal capacity, and what matters more there is pressing the lid down all the way around, not just on the side where the packer stands. A good habit for any size: after closing, run your palm along the edge of the lid to make sure it isn't raised anywhere.

Step by step

How to close the bucket so the seal does its job

The seal works on its own, with no extra seals or shrink bands, but careful filling makes its signal unambiguous. Here are five steps for a plant that supplies stores, markets, or delivery services. They're easy to build into instructions for new staff on the packing line.

1Fill to nominal capacity, not to the brim: a one-liter bucket has 180 ml between nominal capacity and the brim, and the lid needs that headspace.1 L bucket
2If product gets on the rim, wipe it off with a clean, dry cloth: a sticky rim interferes with the lid fit, and a soiled seal makes shoppers suspicious.
3Put the lid on and press it down all the way around until it sits evenly in the double rim on every side.
4Apply the label so it doesn't overlap the seal or cover the word OPEN: the tamper evidence should be visible at a glance.
5Before shipment, scan the rows on the pallet: it's better to keep a bucket with a partly torn seal at the plant than to explain it to the store later.

Logistics

From the factory to the store shelf

While the packaging is empty, the seal has nothing to protect: its job starts at your plant, once the lid goes on a full bucket. Empty buckets arrive nested in stacks. You can pick them up by the pallet from the factory warehouse in the Bishkek Free Economic Zone (FEZ), Ak-Chiy village. We deliver with our own trucks across Bishkek and Chuy Region, and ship via a freight carrier to Osh, Jalal-Abad, Karakol, Naryn, Talas, and other cities in Kyrgyzstan. For manufacturers and retail chains in Kazakhstan, pallets go to Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, Karaganda, and beyond within the EAEU. Our sales manager confirms delivery time and cost when you place the order. From there, your product travels to the store, and an intact seal on every bucket shows the recipient that no one opened it in transit.

Questions and answers

Questions about the OPEN tear strip

Didn't find an answer? Our sales manager replies Mon-Fri, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM Bishkek time

It's a tamper-evident tear strip. The word is embossed and shows you where to pull. If the strip is in place, the lid hasn't been removed even once since filling.

Don't put it on the shelf: set it aside and note it in the receiving documents before the delivery is accepted. Then take it up with the product supplier: they know their supply chain and can find out at what stage the bucket was opened.

Yes, the lid snaps back into the double rim, and the product stays in the same bucket. The seal can't be put back, though, so anyone who looks at the bucket will see it's been opened.

A short line on the label is enough: "Before buying, check that the OPEN tear strip is intact." At a market, it helps if the seller points out the seal when a regular customer buys their first bucket. After that, shoppers check it themselves out of habit.

There's no extra charge for the seal: it's built into every food-grade bucket. Our sales manager quotes each order based on size, quantity, handle type, and printing. Call +996 222 600 292.

No, as long as the seal stays visible. With IML, the image is fused into the wall during molding and doesn't touch the seal. A label on a finished bucket is placed so it doesn't overlap the word OPEN.

Yes. Pallets ship from our plant to Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, Karaganda, and other cities within the EAEU. Our sales manager confirms delivery time and cost when processing your order.

Choose a bucket with a tamper-evident lid

Every food-grade bucket in the catalog has the seal, so all you need to choose is the size, color, and handle. You'll find sizes and application examples on our tamper-evident buckets page, and printing your brand next to the seal is explained in our IML section.

Want shoppers to notice the seal?

Tell us where your product is sold and who receives it before it goes on display. Our sales manager will suggest the size and body color that make the seal most visible, and advise where to place the label so it doesn't compete with the word OPEN. We'll also calculate how many pallets of packaging you need per month.
