Plastic or metal? It's the question every production shop faces when paint, grease, honey, or fruit butter has to go into packaging anywhere from one liter to twenty-odd liters. We compare them without slogans, using only what can be weighed, measured, and counted. For HTI Group polypropylene buckets, we have the figures: body weight, handle, units per pallet. We don't have that data for tinplate packaging, so we show you how to measure it on your own sample.
Each row is a polypropylene bucket for a product often packed in metal. Bucket weights come from the catalog. The "Packaging per 1 L" column shows how many grams of packaging there are per liter of nominal capacity, which makes it easy to compare packaging of different sizes and materials. The last column shows how many empty buckets, nested in stacks, fit on a pallet.
| Volume | Task | Bucket weight | Packaging per 1 L | Handle | Empty buckets per pallet |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 900 ml | halva instead of a tin | 34 g | 37.8 g | molded-in plastic | 7,200 |
| 1 L | heavy grease for garages | 36 g | 36 g | plastic | 6,480 |
| 2.3 L | condensed milk for a pastry shop | 62 g | 27 g | metal bail handle | 3,300 |
| 3 L | water-based paint for retail | 95 g | 31.7 g | metal bail handle | 2,800 |
| 5.6 L | herring and preserved fish for stores | 156 g | 27.9 g | metal bail handle | 1,920 |
| 11.5 L | fruit butter for bakeries | 307 g | 26.7 g | bail handle with plastic grip | 816 |
| 18 L | apiary honey for wholesale | 526 g | 29.2 g | bail handle with plastic grip | 600 |
"Packaging per 1 L" is the bucket weight divided by its nominal capacity. Do the same math for your tinplate sample: put the empty bucket on the scale and divide grams by liters. Based on product density, a 2.3 L bucket holds about 3 kg of condensed milk, an 11.5 L bucket about 15.3 kg of fruit butter, and an 18 L bucket about 25.6 kg of honey.

The tool covers seven jobs that usually call for a tin bucket or can, from small packs of halva to 18 liters of honey. Click yours to see the polypropylene bucket to scale, its weight, handle, and number of empty units per pallet. Compare those figures with the metal packaging you have in hand.
The rows come from this page's table: each one has its own packaging.
We ship in full pallets, so the number of pallets is rounded up.

286 mmThe plastic vs metal debate is usually all talk: one person is used to tin, another to polypropylene. We suggest putting a sample of each side by side and going through four points where the answer comes from measurement, not opinion. For plastic buckets the figures come from the catalog; for metal ones your supplier or your scale will give them.

Your packaging travels in every truck along with the product. A one-liter polypropylene bucket weighs 36 g, a 5.6 L one 156 g, and an 18 L one 526 g. What a metal bucket of the same size weighs depends on the tinplate thickness and design, so there's only one honest way to find out: weigh a sample and compare it with the figure in the table.
Empty polypropylene buckets taper slightly toward the bottom and nest inside each other. That's why a pallet holds 7,200 of the 900 ml buckets, 2,800 of the three-liter ones, or 600 of the 18 L ones. With metal packaging, it all comes down to shape: tapered pails nest too, cylindrical cans don't. Ask your supplier how many they ship per pallet and put the two figures side by side.
A tin lid is usually pressed into the opening or clamped on with a ring, and opened with a screwdriver or a key. A plastic bucket has an OPEN tamper-evident tear strip molded under the rim: you tear it off the first time you open the bucket. An intact strip tells the seller and the shopper that nobody has tampered with the packaging. After that, the lid comes off and goes back on by hand, no tools needed.
You can't see the product through tin; only the artwork tells you what's inside. Polypropylene buckets in every size also come in clear, so halva, herring, or olives speak for themselves. You can brand them with a label or with IML printing, where the image becomes part of the wall during molding. The 15 L bucket isn't available with IML.
It's easier to decide with a quick test in your own shop than from descriptions. You'll need samples of both packs, a scale, and product from your current batch. The five steps below need no lab and give you figures you can take to management.
The easiest way to switch from metal to polypropylene is to start with one pallet for a trial run: even 2,800 three-liter buckets take up just one pallet space. Pickup is from the warehouse at the plant (Ak-Chiy village, Bishkek Free Economic Zone). Plants in Bishkek and the Chuy Region get packaging on our own delivery trucks; for Osh, Karakol, or Talas it goes by freight carrier. To Kazakhstan (Almaty, Taraz, Shymkent, Astana), pallets travel as a shipment within the EAEU. When you place your order, our sales manager will tell you the delivery cost and when to expect the truck. Orders are made up of full pallets, but you can mix sizes: 3 L for retail and 18 L for wholesale in one shipment.

Metal vs plastic is just one of the choices you'll face. Other articles on our blog cover plastic vs glass, bucket vs jerry can, labels vs IML, and the seven parameters for choosing the bucket itself.

A metal bucket's weight depends on wall thickness and design, so there's no single figure. Tin of the same size usually turns out heavier, but a scale is the reliable way to confirm it.
Water-based paints, putties, and primers are routinely packed in polypropylene; see the sizes on the paint buckets page. Solvent-based formulas are trickier: we don't claim resistance to specific substances. Only a trial batch with your own formula will show compatibility.
Look under the rim: there's an OPEN tamper-evident tear strip. It tears off the first time the bucket is opened and can't be put back. Our article on tamper evidence explains how it works and why retail needs it.
Yes: a clear body is available for each of the 14 sizes, up to and including 21 L. The opaque option is white or a custom color (Pantone match). To show off a product in large packs, look at the 11.5 L bucket with a 295 mm opening and a bail handle with a plastic grip.
Not always. Buckets up to one liter have a plastic handle, and the 560 ml has none at all, just side lugs. From 2.3 to 5.6 L they get a metal bail handle, and from 8 to 21 L a bail handle with a plastic grip. The body is polypropylene, but on the heavy sizes the handle is metal, just like on a traditional tin pail.
It depends on the size: 600 of the 18 L buckets, 816 of the 11.5 L, 2,800 three-liter, and 6,480 one-liter buckets. That density comes from nesting the empty buckets. The breakdown for the whole lineup is in our article on packaging per pallet.
When your formula or the transport rules for your product require it: solvent-based formulas or hot filling. We don't claim any properties for these cases, and we won't promise that plastic can replace metal there. If in doubt, start with one pallet and see how the filled buckets hold up in the warehouse and on the road.
The catalog lists dimensions, tare weight, handle type, and units per pallet for every size: everything you need to compare with metal packaging. You can put two sizes side by side in the bucket comparison, and the IML printing page covers branding.
Tell us what you pack, what metal packaging your product goes in now, and how many units you sell per month. Our sales manager will suggest a bucket of similar size, give you its weight and units per pallet, and for tricky formulas suggest starting with a trial run.
