Cat litter is a frequent purchase that people carry home by hand, so the packaging has to hold the weight, reclose after every top-up, and not tear like a paper bag. A bucket with a bail handle does all that and then stays useful around the house for a long time. HTI Group molds buckets from 3.8 to 18 L for producers and packers of bentonite, wood, and silica gel cat litter in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
The choice comes down to three things: how much litter goes in the pack, how dense it is, and how it will be carried. Litter is sold both by the liter and by the kilogram, and either way you want a bucket with a little headspace so the granules don't press against the lid. Here's how producers and packers usually build their lineup.
Cat litters vary widely in bulk density: silica gel crystals are light, wood pellets are heavier, and clumping bentonite is the heaviest. We calculated the weight of a filled bucket, packaging included, at three reference densities: 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 kg/L. Finding your own figure is easy: measure out one liter of litter and weigh it. The handle isn't included in the figures: the bail handle of the 8 L bucket, for example, weighs 40 g and barely changes the total.
| Volume | Tare weight | At 0.5 kg/L | At 0.7 kg/L | At 1.0 kg/L | Handle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3.8 L | 110 g | 2.0 kg | 2.8 kg | 3.9 kg | metal or plastic |
| 5.6 L | 156 g | 3.0 kg | 4.1 kg | 5.8 kg | metal or plastic |
| 8 L | 250 g | 4.3 kg | 5.9 kg | 8.3 kg | metal, 40 g, with plastic grip |
| 11.5 L | 307 g | 6.1 kg | 8.4 kg | 11.8 kg | metal with plastic grip |
| 15 L | 450 g | 8.0 kg | 11.0 kg | 15.5 kg | metal, 40 g, with plastic grip |
| 18 L | 526 g | 9.5 kg | 13.1 kg | 18.5 kg | metal, 60 g, with plastic grip |
A 5.6 L bucket of heavy bentonite weighs almost 6 kg, and so does an 8 L bucket of medium-density litter. So when a brand makes several types of litter, it sizes the bucket for each one to keep the pack weight familiar to customers. For lightweight silica gel, that usually means going one size up.

Cat litters vary widely in bulk density: silica gel is light, wood pellets are heavier, and bentonite is the heaviest. Pick a reference density of 0.5, 0.7, or 1.0 kg per liter, and the tool shows the net weight and the weight of a full bucket including packaging. To enter your own density, use the "Your own product" button.
Enter the net weight and the calculator will pick packaging from this page.

286 mmEach litter behaves differently: one is dusty, another is bulky, and a third hates moisture. A bucket with a lid that snaps into a double rim handles all three, while the handle and size are matched to the specific product. Here's what packers consider when they move litter from bags to buckets.

Clumping bentonite is the heaviest of the three, so it goes into buckets with a bail handle, and from 8 L up, with a plastic grip: the plastic tube spreads the weight across your palm. A tight lid keeps fine clay dust out of the store's stockroom.
Sawdust pellets are large, so their packaging ends up bulky. An 8 or 11.5 L bucket with a wide opening lets you pour them straight from the sack on the packing line, and at home the scoop stays inside, under the lid.
Silica gel crystals absorb moisture, so an open bag of them is best kept out of the bathroom. A bucket recloses after every top-up, and a clear body shows how many crystals are left.
You have to hug a paper sack of litter to carry it, but a bucket goes in one hand by its bail handle. The 3.8 and 5.6 L buckets come with a choice of metal or plastic handle, and the 18 L bucket has a 60 g bail handle with a plastic grip.
Cat litter sits on the shelf next to cat and dog food and household cleaning products, and those come with their own sizes and numbers.

One pallet holds 1,920 of the 5.6 L buckets or 840 of the 8 L buckets, with the empties nested inside each other. You can pick up pallets from our plant in the Bishkek Free Economic Zone (FEZ), Ak-Chiy village, or have our own trucks deliver them across Bishkek and Chuy Region; packaging goes to Osh, Jalal-Abad, Karakol, and other regions of Kyrgyzstan via a freight carrier. For producers in Kazakhstan, including Almaty, Karaganda, Astana, and Shymkent, we ship by the pallet within the EAEU. Your sales manager confirms delivery time and cost when you place your order.

It depends on bulk density: at 0.5 kg/L, about 3.0 kg including the bucket; at 1.0 kg/L, about 5.8 kg. The empty bucket weighs 156 g, and the handle adds a little more.
A bucket with a bail handle is easy to carry, recloses after every top-up, and won't tear if set down on a wet floor. Customers keep using it at home afterward, so your brand on the side stays right in front of them.
Wood pellets are lighter than bentonite, so for the same pack weight they need a bigger bucket, usually 8 or 11.5 L. If you sell by the liter, go one size above the pack's nominal volume.
Clear buckets show the color and size of the granules, which works well for silica gel and colored litters. White is the choice for a large logo and instructions: your brand stands out on the shelf, and bentonite dust on the inside walls doesn't catch the eye.

Yes. A label can be applied to the finished bucket, and for ongoing production, in-mold labeling (IML) is a good fit: the image is fused into the wall during molding and won't peel when the bucket is washed clean of bentonite dust. Learn more on our IML printing page.
Yes, by the pallet within the EAEU to Almaty, Karaganda, Astana, Shymkent, and other cities. Different sizes can be combined in one shipment, and your sales manager confirms delivery time and cost when you place the order.
The catalog lists dimensions, tare weights, and handle options for every size. Dry food and treats for cats and dogs are covered on our pet food buckets page, and the full lineup for this industry is on our pet supplies packaging page.
Tell us the type of litter, the pack weight or volume, and where it's sold. Our sales manager will pick a size with headspace to the brim and the right handle, and calculate a month's worth of packaging. If your lineup has several types of litter, list them all: we'll choose sizes so that full buckets of each type weigh about the same.
