Sary mai and margarine

Buckets for butter and ghee

Ghee (sary mai) served with tea and flatbread, homemade butter sold by weight, retail spreads, margarine for puff pastry: all of these are fatty products that easily pick up other odors, so they belong under a lid. HTI molds food-grade buckets from 560 ml to 21 L for creameries, farms, bakeries, and canteens in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The lid snaps into a double rim, and the OPEN tamper-evident tear strip shows whether the bucket has been opened.

Net weight on the label

What net weight goes into each bucket

Butter is sold by weight, and the label needs a round number: half a kilo, two, five, or ten kilograms. Our calculations assume about 0.9 kg per liter, which is close to the density of butter, ghee, and most spreads. Next to the weight at nominal fill, you'll see a practical net weight that leaves a little headspace under the lid. To get the exact figure for your recipe, weigh one filled bucket as a check.

Three sizes match standard weights almost exactly: the 560 ml bucket holds half a kilo, the 5.6 L bucket five kilograms, and the 11.5 L bucket ten. These are the easiest buckets to put on a price list and an invoice. A two-kilo net fill in the 2.3 L bucket leaves about 220 ml of space to the brim, so the spread doesn't smear the rim when carried.

What net weight fits in a bucket

Butter is packed to round weights: half a kilo, one kilo, five, or ten. A liter of butter weighs about 0.9 kg. Enter the net weight you need, and the tool shows the bucket that holds it at nominal fill, along with the gross weight and the headspace to the brim.

How to choose

From gift packs to bakery deliveries

For butter, choose the size by a round net weight and by who will open the bucket. A family needs half a kilo or a kilo, a canteen five kilograms, and a bakery ten or more. If your product goes to several channels, stock two or three sizes rather than one that tries to fit all.

A fatty product

Butter is fussier than it looks

Butter and margarine don't leak or ferment, but they have their own weak spots. They absorb odors from whatever shares the cold room and leave a greasy film on everything they touch, and ghee even changes state: it's poured as a liquid and sold solid. Here's how the bucket handles each of these quirks.

Away from fish and onions

In a cafe's shared cold room, butter sits next to smoked meats, herbs, and onions. The flat lid snaps into the double rim, seals all the way around, and keeps the product apart from its shelf neighbors. As long as the bucket stays closed, the butter smells like butter, not like the rest of the cold room.

Poured liquid, scooped out with a spoon

Sary mai is filled while it's liquid and gradually sets into a firm mass in the bucket. The bucket opens across its full diameter, so the set ghee comes out with a spoon or knife, leaving nothing around the edges. Your production technologist sets the filling conditions, and it's worth checking them on a trial batch.

Sold by weight at the bazaar

In the dairy rows of bazaars in Bishkek and Osh, homemade butter is sold by the chunk. Vendors keep most of it in a lidded 5.6 L bucket and put out only what will sell within the hour. The rest doesn't dry out in front of customers or collect dust from the aisle.

For bakeries: ten-kilo buckets

Bakeries buy pastry margarine and butter for puff pastry in 11.5 L buckets holding about 10 kg of product. The bail handle with plastic grip carries the full weight from the storeroom to the dough mixer, and the OPEN tamper-evident tear strip shows at receiving that the delivery wasn't opened in transit.

Logistics

Packaging ready for the summer butter season

In summer, when milk is most plentiful on the jailoo (mountain pastures) and in the valleys, farms churn butter and render ghee in advance, and they need far more buckets than in winter. You can pick up your order from the factory warehouse in the Bishkek Free Economic Zone (FEZ), Ak-Chiy village, and our own trucks deliver across Bishkek and Chuy Region. We ship buckets to creameries in Naryn, Talas, Karakol, Osh, and Jalal-Abad via a freight carrier, and to buyers in Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, and Karaganda by the pallet within the EAEU. Your sales manager confirms delivery time and cost when you place your order. Empty buckets arrive nested, so a season's supply fits in a small shop's storeroom.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about butter buckets

Didn't find your answer?A sales manager replies Mon-Fri, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM, Bishkek time

About 0.9 kg at nominal fill. Brim-full, the one-liter bucket holds 1.18 L, but don't fill it right up to the lid: you need a gap so the lid seats in the rim without touching the product. For an exact figure, weigh one filled bucket from your batch.

Sary mai is usually filled while liquid and sets in the bucket. Your production technologist determines the filling temperature: test the conditions on a trial batch of buckets before switching your whole output over.

Most often the 11.5 L bucket: it holds about 10 kg, the standard delivery unit for bakeries. The metal bail handle with plastic grip carries the full weight, and the 295 mm opening lets you scoop product with a wide spatula. Smaller bakeries do fine with the 5.6 L bucket for 5 kg.

White is the more common choice for butter: it makes your branding stand out and lets in less light from display case lamps. Clear buckets go to the bazaar when you want to show off the color of homemade sary mai. Both are molded from the same food-grade polypropylene in every size.

Our sales manager prices each order. The price depends on size, quantity, color, handle, and printing. Call +996 222 600 292 and tell us the net weight you need and how many buckets you use per month.

Yes, with a label or in-mold labeling (IML). An IML label is fused into the wall during molding, so greasy marks simply wash off without lifting the edges of the design. For a small farm just starting out, a label with the name, ingredients, and net weight is enough.

Yes, by the pallet within the EAEU, to Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, Karaganda, and other cities. Your sales manager confirms delivery time and cost when you place the order. One pallet holds 7,200 of the 560 ml buckets or 816 of the 11.5 L buckets.

Catalog

Packaging for butter and dairy in the catalog

The catalog has every bucket from 560 ml to 21 L, and for single-serve butter and spreads, our hexagonal 250 ml containers are a good fit. Packaging for sour cream, cottage cheese, and suzma is covered separately on our dairy buckets page.

Planning packaging for butter season?

Tell us how much butter you produce per month and in what weights you sell it. Our sales manager will split your output across sizes, calculate the pallets, and suggest where the net weight and ingredients fit on the bucket wall. If you also pack sour cream or cottage cheese, mention them too, and you'll get one combined estimate.
